CLEANING STAINLESS STEEL
– Hacked by Sasha M. –
Here's what you need:
- 1 Lemon cut in half
- ¼ Cup of Rock Salt
Have you ever wondered how well all these Pinterest posts work? You know the ones that boast all the cool new ways to clean your home? Most of these tips are free or very very cheap - using just a few supplies that you already have around the house. Well, I tested one this week. I decided to try a new way to deep clean my stainless steel sink. The instructions said to cut a lemon in half and pour rock salt on the inside and then scrub your stainless steel sink with it.
Let me tell you, having six kids and a dog home all day every day, our sink needs a deep clean. Our home needs a deep clean - but more on that another time. The kids are constantly in the kitchen eating snacks and meals. We are filling our dog bowl with water in that sink, prepping dinner with the sink, and tossing dirty dishes in the sink. The fact is it’s a dirty mess most of the time. So, what could be easier than rock salt and lemon?

Step 1: Cut the Lemon
This part was super easy. Literally cut the lemon in half.
Step 2: Place Rock Salt on Lemon
I cut the lemon in half and then poured the rock salt on my cutting board. I laid the lemons face down on the rock salt hoping that it would some how “stick”. It didn’t. Perhaps the rock salt was too large but it didn’t stick well.
Step 3: Scrub Sink with Half of the Salted Lemon
A few “pieces” of the salt kind of stuck but I immediately became worried that it might scratch the stainless steel interior of the sink. I proceeded to try to clean the sink with the lemon regardless, being careful not to press too hard.
Overall I’m not sure that this truly “deep cleaned” my sink. Though my sink was cleaner than when I started the project, I don’t think I would consider it “deep cleaned”. The salt did not work like it was supposed to and I felt that I could potentially damage the sink with what was left on the lemon. The lemon did smell pleasant, but I’m not sure it has sufficient deep cleaning properties in and of itself.

This Hack DOES NOT Clean Crap in a Snap.
